What does being a trainee involve?
Getting ready
In the months before you leave, you will get to know the other Belgian trainees. All trainees get together a number of times to prepare for their adventure. Not only will you find out what to expect, but you will already learn some skills, so that you'll be all set for life on board a sailing ship!
On board
Familiarise yourself with life at sea! The experienced crew will happily welcome you aboard the ship and teach you the ropes. Standing at the helm, hoisting the sails, cooking for the crew, climbing the masts... you will perform all these tasks as a team, under the supervision of the permanent crew. Please note: the explanations will often be given in English, so a basic level of English will be required.
Ashore
At sea, you'll get to know yourself, but on land, you get to meet the rest of the world. At the various ports, there will be some time for celebrations and relaxation. Each host city welcomes the sailing ships of The Tall Ships Races with a major event. At each location, you'll have a chance to sample the local culture, take part in sports activities and show visitors around your ship.
A learning experience
The Tall Ships Races are not only an unforgettable journey, but you will also learn a whole host of skills along the way. Will you take part as a trainee? It will certainly come in handy in your future career:
- You will learn to work as part of a team.
- You will tackle challenges and push your limits.
- You will learn how to respond to problems and develop a problem-solving mindset.
- You will communicate with young people from other cultures.
- You will take on responsibilities on board.
