What are The Tall Ships Races?

Once every four years, dozens of sailing ships make their way to Antwerp. Ships of various sizes moor along the quays and in the city's docks. Thousands of people then come along to admire and visit these pearls of the sea. But what is the story behind the ships? And why are they coming to Antwerp?

Hundreds of young people learn to sail

The Tall Ships Races have been organised by Sail Training International (STI) since 1956. This non-profit organisation gives every young person the opportunity to learn to sail, regardless of their nationality, (social) background, culture, religion or gender.

Known as trainees, these young people will sail to a variety of cities during The Tall Ships Races. On board the sailing ships, they take on various tasks and learn to work together. Once ashore, they then have the opportunity to explore the city where they have docked. Cultural trips, sports activities, a party, or a crew parade – everything that happens is actually an unforgettable experience!

Although its name creates that impression, the focus of The Tall Ships Races is not on the race. What is actually important about the event is the educational and social aspect. STI aims to foster mutual understanding, respect and international friendships. In 2007, the organisation was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its work.

Antwerp as an "Anchor Port"

In July 2026, The Tall Ships Races will be coming to Antwerp for the 8th time. The city and port have already been involved in the event for a long time. That is the reason why Antwerp was able to become the first "Anchor Port": a host city that welcomes The Tall Ships Races every four years.

Each year, as close partners of The Tall Ships Races, the City of Antwerp and Port of Antwerp-Bruges renew their commitment to sailing training for all young people. Everyone gets a chance to sail. In 2022, for the first time in the history of The Tall Ships Races, young people with physical and mental disabilities took part in the event. A wonderful experience!

Organisation

The Tall Ships Races are an initiative of Sail Training International (STI). Every four years, the City of Antwerp and Port of Antwerp Bruges organise the event in the city, with the support of Sail Training Association Belgium (STAB). In order to achieve that, the City of Antwerp and Port of Antwerp-Bruges are being assisted by the events company Balthazar Events. They take care of the detailed organisation of the event, organise hospitality events and seek partners.
